The socioeconomics of Cobalt and iron ore mining. Case studies of D. R. Congo and South Africa

The German automotive industry is currently regarded as a prime example of an industry in upheaval: carmakers are investing billions in the design of new electric cars and the construction of their production facilities. In times where, sustainable alternatives for the automotive sector get increasingly important, the e-mobility market draws its attention towards the commodity Cobalt. Around two-thirds of this metal is now mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and sustainable mining in the developing country is a long-term challenge. Mr. Jacques Nzumbu will show in the online seminar the situation of small-scale mining in the mining of cobalt

Measured in terms of output, southern Africa is the second largest copper producer in the world after D. R. Congo, Germany imports coal from South Africa for part of its electricity generation, western and Asian countries rely on South African iron ore for steel production, South Africa and Zimbabwe have 95 percent of the world’s platinum reserves. The mining and transportation of these raw materials has serious consequences for local communities and the environment. Dr. Claude Kamemba will show us the present situation of social protests in mining in South Africa.
